Occurrence history of left- and right-sided traffic

Car history: Occurrence history of left- and right-sided traffic

It is difficult to find an automobile forum in which dispute on the right and left wheel did not inflame. Division into the right and left parties of movement has begun even before occurrence of the first car. Historians argue till now among themselves, what movement in Europe was initial. In days of existence of Roman empire horsemen went at the left that the right hand in which they held the weapon, was ready to strike instantly blow going towards to the enemy. Proofs have been found, that Romans had a link sided movement: in 1998 in the Great Britain around Swindon the Roman stone quarry near which the left track has been broken more strongly right has been dug out, and also on the Roman fresco (it is dated 50 BC - 50 d.C.) have been represented two horsemen parting on a left side.

To mount in the Middle Ages it was more convenient at link sided movement as the sword did not stir to landing. However against this argument there is an argument - convenience of driving on the left or right strip at riding trips varies depending on a driving method, and soldiers in comparison with other population was not so much. After people have ceased to take with themselves in road the weapon, movement has started to vary gradually on the right-hand. It spoke that the majority of people - the right-handed person, and at advantage of the right hand in force and dexterity many things more comfortably to do during movement on a road right side.

At walking on foot (without the weapon), at conducting a horse and the cart it is more convenient to keep right side. From this side it is more convenient to person to be close to counter movement to stop for conversation with passers, and it is easier to hold the right hand of a bridle. Knights also went by tournaments on the right - they held a board in the left hand, and a spear had on a back of a horse, but against this argument there is an argument - tournaments were only indicative "shows" and a real life did not concern.

Depending on a kind of the crew, harnessed by horses, convenience the right - and link sided movement varies: with sitting for the driver in front it is more preferable to single crews to go on the right side as at travel with other crew the driver should pull more strongly reins the right hand. Crews with the driver steering a team, sitting on one of horses, also kept to the right - the driver always sits on the left horse to facilitate to itself landing and steering of the right hand. Many-placed and open crews went on a road left side - so the driver could not touch casually with a switch of the passenger or the passer-by going on sidewalk.
